Shraavan is a month-long period that began on July 28 and will end on August 26.

During this period, it is  important that one should plan one’s meals in a way that one has enough energy throughout the day and also one doesn’t gain weight.

This is difficult as during Shraavan people eat potatoes, sabudana, fried foods and sweets, which are foods that ensure weight gain.

Main reason for weight gain at this time is the consumption of deep fried foods. Because of the long gaps between meals the BMR of fasting people goes down which also results in weight gain.

A word of advice:  In Shravan a few people fast for the whole month and others fast only on sawan ka somwars. Generally, people eat their only meal after sunset. Fasting once a week cleanses the body system. People fasting should take lots of fruits and liquids but in reality they they take lots of fried and starchy food.

Eating healthy is important for those who fast for the whole month. In Shraavan the good thing is that people can eat fruits and drink fluids.

Taking a normal meal once in a day is fine but for those people who don’t eat cereals and pulses for the entire month, it is important that they take 500 - 750 ml milk and curd and 30 -50 gm paneer or chhena. You can take few nuts, dates and raisins.

Take larger quantities of those fruits and vegetables including- doodhi, galka, green leafy vegetables. Except beans you can eat all the vegetables.

You can eat potatoes and raw bananas but in limited quantity. Roasted or boiled preparations of potatoes and bananas should be preferred over fried preparations.

In this fast, your diet schedule is generally disturbed, because of which you may develop constipation. To avoid this drink at least 8-10 glasses of water during the day.
