Accusing Congress of dynasticism is one thing and avoiding this temptation is quite another. Ask the ruling BJP, which never let go an opportunity to take a pot shot on the Congress on this issue but itself promoting the same culture.

Dynastic politics is deeply entrenched in state politics and over the years, it has blossomed within the BJP, which calls itself a party with a difference. One doesn’t have to look into distant past. In the recently held by-election on Dholpur seat, the ruling party fielded wife of former BSP MLA BL Kushwaha who had lost his membership after being convicted by the court in a murder case.

The success of this formula may encourage the ruling party to continue with it in the upcoming by-elections in Ajmer Alwar and Mandalgarh. Ajmer and Alwar are parliamentary seats while Mandalgarh is Assembly constituency in Bhilwara district. The by-polls are necessitated following the death of sitting members.

Now, families of these leaders have staked a claim on their political legacy as well as a constituency they represented. For Ajmer parliamentary seat, a family of former Union minister Professor Sanwar Lal Jat wants to contest the election. The party too is reportedly considering fielding his son Ramswaroop Lamba. Other names under consideration are also from the late leader’s family including his wife, daughter and daughter-in-law.

In Alwar, Mohit Yadav son of Dr Jaswant Yadav who is a cabinet minister in Vasundhara Raje government has made his intentions clear. Dr Yadav wants his son to take forward his political legacy by contesting the parliamentary by-election. Mohit has already begun groundwork.

Similarly, in Mandalgarh, late MLA Kirti Kumari’s family is seeking ticket for someone in the family. Her relative Harshita Kumari’s name has been put forward who is socially active. But, she is facing a stiff contest from Avijit Singh, son of Punjab governor BP Singh Badnore who was earlier Member of Parliament. The problem is that if the party doesn’t give tickets to family members or relatives of the leaders, they could affect its winning chances while by giving them tickets, it would face charges of promoting dynastic politics.
