BJP-led Haryana government last month renamed Gurgaon district to Gurugram. Now, RSS has proposed that Ahmedabad be renamed as Karnavati, Hyderabad as Bhagyanagar and Aurangabad as Sambhaji Nagar, according to reports.

RSS used to refer to Haryana as Gurugram even before it was renamed, as they believe in using “historic names” to address cities. Sangh is of the opinion that the name of a place is tied to its “history and culture”.

According to a Hindustan Times report, a Sangh functionary told the daily, "We use the old, historic names of cities and not the ones that were given by invaders. As a free country, we should take pride in our culture."

RSS has pitched that Ahmedabad be named after a Hindu king Karan Dev I, of Solanki dynasty, Aurangabad after Chhatrapati Sambhaji and Hyderabad after goddess Bhagyalakshmi.

Ahmedabad was known as Karnavati, named after Karandev I who ruled it. However, after Ahmed Shah I started ruling, he renamed it to Ahmedabad, in honour of four Ahmads -- his religious teacher Shaikh Ahmad Khattu, Kazi Ahmad, Malik Ahmad, and himself.

Similarly, the proposal to rename Gurgaon was made on the basis of the claim that the financial and industrial hub of the country has been in existence since the times of Mahabharata. It was a gift given by Pandavas to their teacher Guru Dronacharya, thus being referred as Gurugram. However, over a period of time it got distorted to Gurgaon.

In the past too, Sangh and BJP have proposed and changed the name of various places to link it to local history. In 1996, Bombay was renamed as Mumbai after the local goddess Mumbadevi, by ruling BJP-Shiv Sena alliance. In 2014, after the NDA government assumed office, 12 cities in Karnataka including Bengaluru were renamed.
