Amid reports of outbreaks of Zika in Jaipur and H1N1 flu, the Centre said that it has all the wherewithals to tackle the viral diseases across the country. While Jaipur in Rajasthan has seen many Zika cases, several people across many states have been affected by H1N1 or swine flu.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda reviewed the status of H1N1 and Zika cases on Tuesday. Briefing the media about the situation, Nadda said, “Before winter we are gearing up to deal with the H1N1 flu. We are going to talk on how the H1N1 can be curtailed in the nation, especially in the states which are more prone to the virus.”

The minister said the government is fully prepared. “We have sufficient medicines and testing kits in the 41 surveillance centres, government hospitals and labs. Ventilator management training has been done. Health workers have been immunised. Ministry and state governments are geared up,” he added.

The ministry on Monday had asked states to check mosquito breeding and intensify vector control strategies to contain the spread of the disease.

In the past few weeks, the number of people infected with Zika cases, caused by Aedes mosquito, rose to 72 in Rajasthan. The disease, however, is longer a Public Health Emergency of International Concern under the World Health Organisation notification since November 18, 2016.

Meanwhile, swine flu has claimed 6 lives in 15 days in Telangana, while several cases have been reported from Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and other states. Unlike Zika, H1N1 can turn fatal if a patient doesn’t receive timely treatment.
