Three days after BJP national president Amit Shah addressed a public rally in Purulia district of West Bengal, heavyweight ministers and leaders of ruling TMC will partake in a counter-rally at the same place on Sunday.

Main speakers at Sunday’s rally will include state ministers Suvendu Adhikary, Firhad Hakim and Shashi Panja. Party sources said the instruction has been to bring in at least double the number of people who had attended Shah’s rally. “After TMC government came to power, Mamata Banerjee has turned Junglemahal into Sukhimahal. The people here are mostly of the backward class, who are being misled,” said state minister and TMC national secretary general Partha Chatterjee.

BJP leaders, on the other hand, said that the rally was out of fear. “They are afraid of the increasing popularity of BJP in Bengal. It is weird that what the Opposition does, the ruling party is duplicating. It is supposed to be the other way round. They are claiming that Junglemahal is smiling. In fact people here are crying,” said state BJP president Dilip Ghosh.

On June 28, Shah had thrown a challenge to Mamata saying that her government will not be there for too long given the terror she has unleashed and that in 2019 at the Lok Sabha election, the foundation for BJP government in Bengal would be laid. He had also alleged that the state government had highjacked all the Central projects and had also syphoned off funds sent by the Centre for the people in general.

Purulia TMC district president Shantiram Mahato said, “The BJP leaders had levelled several baseless allegations and we need to expose their lies to the people of Purulia.” Politicial pundits believe that the knee-jerk reaction of the TMC implied that they are rattled by the BJP’s impressive performance at Purulia in the recently-concluded Panchayat election.
