President Pranab Mukherjee to inaugurate centenary celebrations of freedom fighter Ranbir Singh Hooda

President Pranab Mukherjee will inaugurate the 100th birth anniversary celebrations of eminent freedom fighter and member of the Constituent Assembly that framed the Indian Constitution, Chaudhary Ranbir Singh Hooda, on November 27.

The event will take place at the Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

President Mukherjee will inaugurate the tribute programme function, while former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will preside over the function.

Ranbir Singh Hooda was born on November 26, 1914 and died on February 1, 2009). He was well known in Haryana's Jat heartland for his role in the freedom struggle and as a leading member of the Indian National Congress. He was also a member of the Provisional Parliament between 1950 and 1952.

Hailing from Sanghi Village in Haryana's Rohtak District, Hooda was imprisoned four times for participating in nationalist movements.

He took a great interest in the promotion of education, and was founder of several high and primary schools in Rohtak District. He was also the founder editor of the weekly Hindi Haryana and headed the Haryana Vidya Parcharani Sabha in Rohtak.

He was a minister in the government of undivided Punjab for several years. His notable contribution during his time in office as the region's Irrigation Minister, was the development of the Bakhra Nangal Power Project.

He was also a member of the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha and the Punjab and Haryana Vidhan Sabha from the year 1947 to 1978. He set a record for being a member of seven different houses in India's democratic history, a feat that has been registered and acknowledged by the Limca Book of Records.

He was also president of Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee from 1977-1980 and member of Congress Working Committee. He was the youngest member of the Constituent Assembly and also its last living member.

His son, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, served as Chief Minister of Haryana for two consecutive terms (2004 to 2014) and his grandson, Deepender Singh Hooda, is a Member of Parliament from Rohtak.

"We will organize various programs in and outside Haryana to spread awareness among people about this proud son of the soil's achievements. We believe that his wonderful life experiences should inspire contemporary society, especially the youth to imbibe the values of sacrifice and dedication he stood for. Persons who have had significant contribution in various sectors of the country will be honoured during the (centenary) celebration," said Deepender Singh Hooda, his grandson.

Ranbir Hooda died at the age of 94, on February 1, 2009 after a long illness.

All three -- Ranbir Singh Hooda , Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Deepender Singh Hooda have had the distinction of being members of parliament along with President Mukherjee at different times.
