Pakistani TV news anchor Hamid Mir of Geo TV has claimed that Mohammed Naved alias Usman Khan, the lone captured LeT militant from the Udhampur terror attack, is an Indian resident from Kashmir.

Mir also claimed that Naved was a bus conductor residing in the Ghat village of Kulgam district in Kashmir and that the militant was known to be a 'jhalla' or a mad person. He went on to say that nine of the fifteen people arrested in connection with helping the militant were his relatives. His immediate family had left their house and fled, he claimed.

Mir said that the second militant in the Udhampur attack, Nouman, who was killed by security forces, too was from India and a resident of Kashmir.

The report comes after it was widely reported in India that Naved's father Mohammed Yakub was traced in Pakistan and that he was terrified of the LeT and the Pakistan army.

Naved aka Usman too had revealed that he was from Pakistan. His neighbours had also reportedly confirmed that his family lived in Ghulam Mohammadabad, in Pakistan's Faisalabad. According to the security forces, the other terrorist Nouman hails from Bahawalpur in Pakistan. Preliminary investigations have reportedly revealed that the Udhampur attack was backed by the ISI.

Since reports that Naved is a Pakistani and belonged to the LeT surfaced, Pakistan has denied that he existed in their database. A Pakistan government source was quoted by the Express Tribune as saying, "National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) record shows Indian claims of an arrested person, Usman Khan (Mohammed Naved Yakub), originating from Pakistan are totally baseless."

Ironically, in 2008 following the 26/11 terror attack, it was Hamid Mir who through Geo TV Channel located Ajmal Kasab's father in Okara in Pakistan. At that time, the Pakistan government was in absolute denial that Kasab was its citizen.

Mir had hit international headlines after the Pakistan government had suspended Geo TV after Mir blamed an attempt to assassinate him on former Inter Services Intelligence chief (ISI) Lt Gen Zaheerul Islam.
