Pakistan government may shelve Pervez Musharraf's treason trial to appease army

The Pakistani federal government is considering shelving treason trial against former military ruler General Pervez Musharraf after a costly exercise that lasted a little over a year.

An interior ministry official said that the shelving of the trial was a part of a strategy in the aftermath of the Peshawar massacre. He said that the federal government wanted to improve relations with the army by shelving Musharraf's treason trial, reported the Express Tribune.

Sources privy to the development said that the federal government wants the issue to be delayed and lingered on until the special court's functioning becomes irrelevant.

The prosecution has cited the case as "unending process of trial", refusing to prosecute abettors in the case.

The case currently stands in the same position as on December 21st when it first began.

According to legal wizards, a fresh process would be required for a joint trial wherein Musharraf would be charge sheeted again.
