Owing to the increased acceptance of Ayurvedic medicines in the global market, the Government of India is in the process of inking a pact with 45 countries to undertake research and academic activities in the AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) sector, stated Shripad Yesso Naik, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of AYUSH, at the flag off for 'Run for Ayurveda' event in the national capital.

This pact will be an addition to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) the Ayush Ministry signed with nine countries.

The event, organised by the Ministry and the All India Institute of Ayurveda, was attended by over 2,000 participants. The event also shared information on the benefits of herbal drugs such as anti-diabetic BGR-34 and Neeri KFT, used for treatment of kidney ailments.

"We are witnessing a highly receptive environment where the AYUSH systems and herbal drugs are being widely recognised worldwide, translating into growing global demand. Collaboration with other countries will push the international demand as well as provide work opportunities to the practitioners and students of Ayurveda," an official from the Ministry said.

The government is also offering incentives to the AYUSH industry for international cooperation and encouraging certification of AYUSH products to facilitate exports. The Ayush Ministry official attributed the growing demand to the cost-effectiveness and minimal side effects of herbal drugs, which are being used to treat diseases related to drastic changes in lifestyle, dietetic habits, increased industrialisation, and pollution.

"The signing of the MoU with other countries will ensure that Ayurveda and other traditional medicinal systems and AYUSH drugs get recognition abroad. Many herbal drugs here are developed after following due scientific process as per global norms," said Sanchit Sharma, Executive Director, Aimil Pharmaceuticals, responsible for manufacturing Ayurvedic formulations like BGR-34 developed by CSIR and DRDO.

The ministry of AYUSH has already signed a project collaboration agreement (PCS) with the WHO for cooperation on promoting the quality, safety, and effectiveness of service provision in traditional and complementary medicine. According to the WHO, the global herbal market is estimated to reach about $5 trillion by 2050 from the current level of $6.2 billion.
