Stressing on the importance of good education, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Oscar Fernandes on Sunday said that children of the country can be entirely equipped and empowered provided they get the right kind of education.

Reaching out to the students of Rosary Senior Secondary School on the occasion of the 56th Annual Day Mega Event, he complemented the school for their academic excellence, and said that it has broken several records since its inception. “The best thing in life is good education. Education empowers. The biggest task of ourcountry is to provide education to all,” he said while addressing the students of Rosary School.

Fernandes further said that children today are completely exposed to technological advances, which has transformed the education system “When we wanted to talk to people abroad, we had to wait for three days. Today it is possible with a press of a button. I was talking to an engineering student, and I asked him to tell me the height of the Taj Mahal, and he immediately got the answer with the help of his mobile phone,” he said.

Urging teachers and parents to adapt themselves to the evolving education system, he asked them to keep pace with the changing technology in order to devise new and innovative methods of teaching children.

Expressing concern regarding the urban-rural divide in the education sector, Fernandes said that India cannot holistically march forward, unless it ensures equal empowerment of the poor. “Our country has in force Right to Education. But there are still many slums and villages where children cannot go to school,” he added. Rev. Anil J T Couto, Archbishop of Delhi, who was the Guest of Honour also addressed the students at the event. The highlight of the event was a ‘Cinderella’ dance drama performed by the students.
