The war within the Yadav clan is back on. Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav pulled up his son Akhilesh Yadav while addressing party supporters in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh. While coming down heavily on Akhilesh, the SP founder said, "One who can ditch his father can never be loyal to anyone."

He was quoted as saying: "Modi ne jo kaha kya galat kaha? Jo apne baap ka nahi huwa, wo kisi ka nahi ho sakta. (What did Modi say that was wrong? Those who can't be with their father, can't be with anyone.)"

Mulayam slammed his son saying, "I made Akhilesh the chief minister. Never had a living father stepped aside to nominate his son for the top post, but I did. But what did Akhilesh gave me in return, I was never insulted in this manner," the SP patriarch rued. Mulayam's brother Shivpal Yadav was seen standing by his side while the SP founder ridiculed his son.

Earlier, the bonhomie between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mulayam at UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's swearing-in ceremony set tongues wagging. Modi and Mulayam shared a few words and almost everyone wanted to know what they had said to each other. If a report in Telegraph is to believed, it was something of a PTA meeting with the parent asking the teacher to 'look after' the student.

A senior BJP politician who was present at the venue and caught snatches of the conversation and told the newspaper that Mulayam said to Modi: “Thoda Akhilesh ka khayal rakhiye (Please take care of Akhilesh)." After Akhilesh shook hands with PM Modi, Mulayam reportedly said to him: “Inko sikhaiye (Teach him please)." The BJP source said that he reckoned that Mulayam was asking Modi to teach Akhilesh the intricacies of politics. Modi did not disappoint and patted Akhilesh on his right shoulder.

The bonhomie was in stark contrast to the bitter election campaign that had preceded it. In his rallies, Modi had ridiculed the opposition alliance of SP and Congress, saying they together stood for 'SCAM' (Samajwadi, Congress and Mayawati). Not to be outdone, Akhilesh had come out with his own take on SCAM, saying it stood for 'Save Country from Amit (Shah) and Modi'.

Akhilesh picks MLA Ram Goving Chaduhary as SP LOP

Meanwhile, eight-time MLA Ram Govind Chaudhary of SP is set to become the Leader of the Opposition in the UP Assembly as party chief Akhilesh nominated him, ignoring stalwarts like Azam Khan and Shivpal Yadav.

"Akhilesh Yadav has nominated Ram Govind Chaudhary as the Leader of the SP Legislature Party and he will also be the Leader of the Opposition," SP spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary said. 70-year-old Chaudhar is considered close to Akhilesh and had served as basic education, child development and nutrition minister in the erstwhile SP government. The name of Azam Khan, the parliamentary affairs minister in the Akhilesh government, was also doing the rounds for the post. During the Mayawati government, when Samajwadi Party was the main opposition party in UP, Shivpal Yadav was the Leader of Opposition. But since he fell out with his nephew Akhilesh, it was unlikely that Shivpal would be nominated for the post. Chaudhary, who was active in student union politics, was first elected to the UP Legislature in 1977 from Chillhar constituency. He now represents Bansdih constituency in Ballia district.

Akhilesh had convened the party's national executive meeting in Lucknow on March 25, but senior members Mulayam and Khan were conspicuously absent. Following a bitter feud within the family, Akhilesh had snatched reins from Mulayam and their fight also reached the Election Commission on the dispute over 'bicycle' symbol, which was allotted to Akhilesh. Mulayam, who has since been given the role of party mentor, had openly criticised the Samajwadi-Congress alliance and was virtually absent during the recent UP assembly poll campaign.
