No illusions about Mahagathbandhan, but BJP the greater eviI, says Justice Katju

A day after BJP crashed to a humiliating defeat in the Bihar assembly elections, former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju has called the BJP the greater eviI.

In a bitterly fought election between Nitish Kumar and Narendra Modi, the Mahagathbandhan won 178 seats in Bihar, a commanding two-third majority in the 243-member assembly. The Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies had to settle for a mere 58 seats.

On Tuesday, Katju wrote on Twitter,

Meanwhile, in his blog Justice Katju also wrote about how he had predicted the Bihar election result. He said, "Many people asked me how I could so accurately predict the results of the Bihar election, when all the exit polls failed (NDTV was predicting an NDA victory till the last day before the results). My answer is simple: in most states, including Bihar, most people vote on caste and religious lines, unless there is a wave."

He further added, "The Modi wave of 2014 had dissipated totally because people found the vikas slogan hollow as there was no job creation after May 2014. So they fell back on the traditional line of voting on the basis of caste and religion."

However, protecting the leadership from any attack, BJP has ruled out holding anyone responsible for the rout in Bihar Assembly elections and rejected criticism even from within that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's quota remarks was one of the major reasons for the defeat.

The party admitted that it lost because the size of the "social arithmetic" cobbled by the grand alliance was bigger than the NDA and acknowledged that its assessment that the vote transferability among the JD(U), RJD and Congress will not happen proved "incorrect".
