A day after the central government launched the National Air Quality Index, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Tuesday banned all diesel vehicles that are ten years old from the National Capital Region (NCR). This order follows NGT's order passed last year in another case wherein they had banned all petrol and diesel vehicles that are 15 years old from plying on Delhi's roads.

The bans applies to both commercial and private vehicles. The NGT bench chaired by justice Swatanter Kumar has clubbed two vehicular pollution related petitions, one by Agra based Dr.Sanjay Kulshreshtha and Delhi based Vardhaman Kaushik.

The bench has given just 20 hours to the concerned government agencies to stop entry of diesel vehicles in the city. The vehicles are also to be checked for their age, weight and pollution levels.

“The Tribunal has said that along with old diesel vehicles overloaded commercial vehicles too won't be allowed inside the NCR's limits. To follow up on its order, the NGT has appointed local commissioners. Along with this, the bench has put a stay on construction projects that are violating laws and are contributing to particulate matter pollution and dust polltution.

The bench had noted that several countries such as Brazil, Denmark, Sri Lanka and China had taken steps to curb or ban use of diesel fuelled vehicles. Delhi faces the worst vehicular pollution in the country as nearly 75 lakh vehicles, the maximum in the country, ply on its roads. In fact, everyday the city adds nearly 1,500 new vehicles to the already choked roads. During earlier hearings, the NGT had asked government agencies to provide total number of diesel vehicles plying on Delhi's roads but the Tribunal was not provided the details. The NGT is also yet to provided with details of how many vehicles have been confiscated after it passed the order on banning 15 year old vehicles.

The bench has asked government agencies to furnish the details during the next hearing on April 10.
