The Mumbai Press Club has finalised the names of the journalists, who will be honoured with the RedInk Awards for Excellence in Journalism-2017, in 32 different categories next month.

The award presentation ceremony will be held on June 7 at Jamshed Bhaba Theatre of the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) at Nariman Point in south Mumbai, the Mumbai Press Club said in a release.

"The Mumbai Press Club has finalised the judging process for the RedInk Awards for Excellence in Journalism- 2017 with the selection of 32 award winners 28 in the competitive category and four in the special categories," the release said.

The names of the prize winners will be announced at the event, it said. Record 1,300 story entries were received from journalists from across the country in video, digital and print formats. These were read and classified over four weeks by curators selected for each of the 10 category of awards, the release said.

The issue of drought that scorched large swathes of the country last year dominated the short-listed stories in many categories like human rights, environment, business and politics. Stories on the severe drought in Bundelkhand region, both in print and video, scored awards in many categories, while reporting on the drought conditions in Maharashtra, too, attracted special attention.

This year, 'Mumbai Star Reporter' Award category has been created, it said.

"As a special gesture of appreciation, the Mumbai Press Club will felicitate Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for recently steering and ensuring the passage of the much-needed Journalists Protection Act," the release said.

In the past, doyens of journalism, including Vinod Mehta, Kuldip Nayar, N Ram, Mrinal Pande, Dr Prannoy Roy and last year T N Ninan have been honoured with the RedInk Award for Lifetime Achievement for their long and consistent service to the profession.
