Following the incident in Rajasthan, wherein Mohammad Afrazul Khan, a labourer hailing from the Malda district of West Bengal, was killed by a youth, chief minister Mamata Banerjee said labourers who had migrated to other states, if feeling insecure, could return to Bengal, where the government will give them work for 200 days in a year.
The CM was speaking at a public meeting in the Kotshila area of the Purulia district.
"People of Rajasthan, UP, and Bihar work in Bengal. They have made this place their motherland and we have welcomed them as well. But if a person from West Bengal went to work in Rajasthan, why was he murdered? If these people want to return to Bengal, they can get their names enrolled at the respective district magistrate's office. We will ensure that they get 200 days' work in a year. The state can also provide for one-time financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to people like these, to set up their own business unit," Mamata said.
She added that in BJP-ruled states, such as Gujarat and Rajasthan, not only Muslims but Christians and Dalits also were facing attacks, but it didn't happen in Bengal, where all lived peacefully.
Mamata claimed that Purulia, the district once dominated by Maoists, was a developed area at present, but the adjoining Jharkhand, which was also inhabited by tribals, failed to do so.
"There is an abundance of natural mineral in Jharkhand but they could not make best use of it. The Had TMC been there, we would have reaped a golden harvest. In fact, the land of the tribal people was taken away forcefully, which we had protested against," she said.
Interestingly, another resident of Bankura district has reportedly been killed in Kerala. The youth, Hemanta Roy, had gone to Kerala to work as an electrician three months ago. His body with his throat slit was discovered on Sunday night.
Talking to DNA over the phone, S Surendran, district police chief of Alappuzha district, Kerala, said Roy's case looked like suicide. "Prima facie investigation showed that it was a self-inflicted wound but we would be able to tell something concrete after the post-mortem report arrives," he said.
