Arjun Meghwal rejected all charges levelled by Bengal CM.
Replying to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s allegation that the Central government had dismissed Christmas as a national holiday without any logic, Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, during his visit to Kolkata on Monday said the allegation was baseless.
“Our government would not take any decision on the basis of religion. It functions according to the provisions of the constitution of the country. Mamata is opposing to every policy of the Centre just for the sake of opposition,” he said interacting with media persons.
On December 22, while inaugurating the Christmas Festival on Park Street, Mamata had questioned the intention behind cancellation of December 25 as a national holiday. She had also said that on two occasions the tableaux proposals from West Bengal during the Republic Day had been rejected by the Centre. Replying to that Meghwal said that the Central government had no hands in it. “These are baseless allegations. There is a committee to look into it to accept or reject such proposals. The government didn’t interfere into these day to day activities. We don’t do politics with everything. Next we will see that an NCC person comes up saying that he had not been selected and it was a conspiracy. Mamata herself is doing politics with this issue,” he added.
Talking about Mamata’s allegations regarding Centre freezing funds for welfare schemes, he said that in a meeting with the Centre and Chief Ministers of the state it was decided that the Centre-state share in most funds would be 60:40 and the on-going schemes would be completed as usual. “She was in the meeting too. Her government had failed to produce utilisation certificate for the funds allocated already by the Centre,” Meghwal said.
Referring to the on-going protests against the Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance (FRDI) Bill, he said that under no circumstances would the depositors’ interests be hampered. “It is a good bill. We have to take care of the investors’ interest. The bill, at present is with the Select Committee which comprises members from all parties including hers. We are not against investors,” he said.
Asked about the Triple Talaq issue he said that it was an attempt by the Centre to ensure equal rights for women. “Shouldn’t women’s rights be protected? The social security and right to equality of women is being looked into. We should welcome the move,” he said.
