Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has continued to shower his home town with plum projects. The latest in Nagpur's kitty is an IIIT (Indian Institute of Information Technology), which will be established soon.

The proposal was cleared by the ministry of human resources and development on Wednesday, tweeted Fadnavis just before leaving for China.

The city, which also houses the headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, already has a National Institute of Technology (NIT).

Most of the mega projects approved in past six months by the Centre or by the state has been for Nagpur. This includes three institutions of national importance — Indian Institute of Management (IIM), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and National Institute of Pharmaceutical education and Research (NIPER). Some of these projects have been pushed to Nagpur to the detriment of other cities.

Fadnavis has also granted his home town two unique universities — Skills University and Security University — which are the first of their kind in India. Besides, a National Law University approved by the previous regime is also on the cards.

With the addition of an IIIT and an already existing NIT, Nagpur is set to become an international educational and research hub.

An international zoo project which was stuck for a few years is also taking shape at Nagpur now. Funds for the project have been approved last week.

Fadnavis's extreme favouritism towards his home town has raised many eyebrows in academic and political circles. While people close to the CM insist that this is to make up for the prolonged discrimination which Nagpur and the Vidarbha region have faced in the past, his opponents feel otherwise. "This is nothing else but preparation for a separate Vidarbha state by the BJP, which has long been supporting the cause, albeit silently, to ensure peaceful coexistence with ally Shiv Sena," said a Congress leader.

With the Mihan (Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur) project, which is expected to fetch Rs1,25,000 crore investment in the next couple of years since Fadnavis is bringing about ease of doing business, observers feel that Nagpur will surpass Mumbai with ample job and education opportunities.
