Madhepura Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 40 parliamentary constituencies in Bihar and will go to polls in the third phase of the general elections on April 23. Madhepura parliamentary constituency is made of six assembly constituencies with three each from Madhepura and Saharsa district.

The sitting MP of Madhepura is Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav who won the Lok Sabha seat in 2014 by defeating Sharad Yadav. Pappu Yadav, who won in 2014 from Madhepura on an RJD ticket, later formed his own party - Jan Adhikar party -  upon expulsion by Lalu Yadav.

Sharad Yadav, who contested the Lok Sabha polls in 2014 on a JD(U) ticket, turned a rebel after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar went back to NDA. He is now RJD's candidate from Madhepura.

Sharad Yadav has won from here four times - 1991, 1996, 1999 and 2009. RJD chief and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav won from Madhepura Lok Sabha seat twice - 1998 and 2004.

The two socialists leaders faced each other thrice and Lalu came on top with a score of 2:1. Lalu has, however, not represented the Madhepura in Lok Sabha for much longer as the 12th Lok Sabha only lasted 13 months. In 2004, when Lalu won from both Chhapra and Madhepura, he decided to retain Chhapra.

The rivalry between Sharad Yadav and Lalu which began in 1997 is now over. While Lalu cannot contest elections on account of his conviction in Fodder scam, Sharad Yadav is holding his flag in Madhepura this time. Looking to secure his fifth win, he is facing Dinesh Chandra Yadav of the JD(U) this time.

There 13 candidates contesting in Madhepura. Pappu Yadav, who wanted an alliance with the Bihar Mahagathbandhan, has also entered the race.

The Madhepura Lok Sabha constituency is made up of six Assembly constituencies - Madhepura district's Alamnagar, Bihariganj and Madhepura constituencies and Saharsa district's Sonbarsha, Saharsa and Mahishi constituencies.

While Janata Dal (United) is part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) which comprises of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), the Bihar Mahagathbandhan comprises Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP), Hindustan Awam Morcha (HAM) and Vikasshil Insan Party (VIP).

The Congress got nine constituencies as per the seat-sharing arrangements, while the RJD has 20 out of which it has forgone Ara in favour of the CPI(ML), which has returned the favour by announcing that the ultra-Left outfit would not field its candidate from Pataliputra, which would be contested by Lalu Prasad's eldest daughter Misa Bharti.

Besides, Upendra Kushwaha's RLSP is contesting five seats and Jitan Ram Manjhis HAM is fighting three. The VIP, founded and headed by Bollywood set designer-turned-politician Mukesh Sahni, has got three seats out of the 40 in Bihar.

The polling on this seat will be held in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections on April 23. Five constituencies of Bihar's 40 Lok Sabha seats - Jhanjharpur, Supaul, Araria, Madhepura and Khagaria - will go to polls in the third phase. A total of 82 candidates are in the fray in the five constituencies that would go to polls.

The results of the  Lok Sabha election 2019 will be declared on May 23.
