As pressure continued to mount on the state administration to arrest the killer of Air Force officer, Corporal Abhimanyu Gaud, Trinamool Congress decided to distance itself from former MLA Mohammad Sohrab who became a TMC loyalist recently after switching from RJD. Gaud was killed in a hit-and-run on the Red Road during Republic Day parade rehearsal on Wednesday.

The incident was getting increasingly embarrassing for the ruling party as the car involved belonged to TMC leader Mohammad Sohrab's son Ambia Sohrab. Amidst allegations by opposition parties that the accused was being protected by the state government, the party decided to dump Sohrab.

Party spokesperson Derek O’Brien broke his silence on the issue. “A horrific incident took place on ‪Kolkata's Red Road earlier this week when a reckless demon of a driver, in a luxury car, ran over and killed an Air Force official on parade. The owner of the car, reported to be driving it at the time of the incident, has no connection with ‪Trinamool Congress. His father is a minor political activist, elected to the state assembly with the support of the Left Front in 2006,” reads the statement issued by O’Brien.

He also added, “Neither the alleged driver of the car not his father have ever attended formal, committee or organisational meetings of Trinamool Congress. Neither of them has ever been appointed to a post, or got a letter to this effect, from the party. We have nothing to do with them and have never had anything to do with them. The culprits must certainly be booked as per the law of the land.”

On Saturday, Bengal BJP’s Youth wing and Mahila Morcha hit the streets to register their protest against the police as the perpetrators are still at large. “As many as four days have passed and not a single arrest has been made. There is absolute lawlessness in the state,” said Rupa Ganguly, actor-turned BJP leader.
