Majid Khan (20), a district level footballer from Anantnag, Majid, who was also working as a volunteer with a humanitarian organisation, took up arms a few days ago to join Lashkar-e-Toiba. Khan's family and friends are in shock. His mother has appealed her son to return home.
Khan's decision was made clear when pictures of him posing with an AK-47 rifle went viral on Facebook last Friday. According to local police, this is a standard practice when a new recruit joins the ranks. He also wrote in his Facebook post, "Why look up at the stars when the biggest star is me."

"Khan Majid plz come back for your parents and sisters...Teri yaad bahot sata rahi hai," one friend wrote. Another wrote, "You are the only hope of your parents, they can't take this separation...Please Majid for their sake please come back... We love you."
Khan, a resident of the Sadiqabad locality in South Kashmir, was pursuing his graduation at Government Boys Degree College in Anantnag. With his recruitment, authorities are worried that more youths in South Kashmir may consider joining the terror group as Khan was considered a local hero.
Senior Superintendent of Police Anantnag, Altaf Ahmed Khan confirmed the news and said, "Majid (Khan) has great influence over his peer group. I believe the local youths who joined terrorism, they may have influenced him."
While details about what prompted him to join are sketchy, friends believe that Majid's turn towards terrorism came when his friend Yawar Nisar, who had joined the Hizbul Mujahideen in July this year, died. After joining the outfit, Nisar died within a fortnight in an encounter with the security forces in a village in Anantnag on August 3. His body was brought home and friends say Majid was particularly affected by his death.
