Pressure is mounting on Jammu and Kashmir agriculture minister Ghulam Hassan Mir to resign even as the Omar Abdullah government is pressing for a thorough probe into the expose’ that former army chief General VK Singh wanted to topple the democratically elected government in the state.

Mir, president of Democratic Party Nationalist (DPN) representing Tangmarg constituency of north Kashmir, is in the line of fire following reports that he allegedly received Rs1.19 crore from the technical services division, a military intelligence wing created by the former army chief in 2010, to engineer a change of government in Jammu and Kashmir. “This is shocking and unfortunate if the story is correct. A democratically elected government being destabilised by an institution that also belongs to our country. A name of minister has also cropped up. If it is correct then the minister in question has no right to be in the cabinet.

Of course he should quit (pending enquiry),” Ali Mohammad Sagar, senior National Conference leader and J&K minister for rural development, told dna.

Sagar said the reports and facts need to be looked into because precious lives have been lost in Kashmir. “If there is truth in the reports and facts are clear then we have to look into it.  It seems conspiracy was hatched and it was pre-planned,” he said. Mir, however, rubbished the reports saying he has always worked for the stability of the government.

Mir’s denial notwithstanding, a political storm has hit the J&K government following the expose. Sources said the state government is pushing for a through probe into the  allegations to unravel the truth.
