Akshaya Tritiya also known as Aksha Teej falls on the third Tithi or Lunar Day of Shukla Paksha (Bright Half) of the pan- Indian month of Vaishakha. The day is considered holy by Hindus and Jains.

The meaning of 'Akshaya' is infinite, i.e., which never recedes. In Sanskrit, it means 'the never diminishing'. It is believed if you do charity and perform good deeds on this day it will bring good luck and success with undiminishing results.

It is also believed that this day is auspicious for starting new ventures and businesses as they will continue to grow and bring prosperity.

It is believed that the Sun and the Moon are most radiant on this day. Hence, it is the most popular date for Hindu marriages and buying gold and diamond is also auspicious as it is believed to stay forever.

For Hindus, this day is considered holy as on this day the God of wisdom and obstacles, Ganesha started writing the epic Mahabharata to Ved Vyas's dictation.

According to Hindu mythology, on this day the river Ganges, the most scared river of India descended to the Earth from the heaven and the Treta Yuga began.

For the Jains, this day is considered holy as it is associated with Lord Adinatha, also known as Rishabhadeva, first of the 24 Tirthakaras.

Also, people who observe year-long alternative-day fasts known as Varshi-tap finish their Tapasya by doing parana by drinking sugar cane juice.

Akshaya Trithya marks the beginning of summers, farmers enjoy this time of crop harvesting by observing fasts and organising fairs.

Akshaya Trithya is also called as Narvanna Parvam. Akshya Tritiya falling on a Rohini star Monday is considered more auspicious.
