Panic spread in Kolkata on Sunday after the city police recovered 14 packets from a plot in Haridevpur area and claimed that they contained foetuses. By evening, the narrative had changed and the cops said it was nothing but medical waste.

Confusion and rumours spread like wildfire after the packets were found strewn at a plot on 214 Raja Ram Mohan Road which is also known as a debottar (belonging to a deity) property. It was recently sold to a developer and the discovery was made when the place was being cleared.

While the packets were sent to MR Bangur Hospital, sources said they found only medical waste and dry ice inside. "The plastic bags actually contained medical waste, it was found later," DC South-West Division Nilanjan Biswas said.

However, much drama played out immediately after the packets were found. While a posse of cops sealed the place, Mayor Sovan Chatterjee said, "I have been informed by the local public representatives that 14 bodies had been stuffed inside plastic packets. They had been treated with chemicals to avoid decomposition. The police will also ascertain if more bodies are still there."

DCP Biswas said they would in a better position to comment on the "cause of death, whether they were stillborn or killed after birth". The packets were scattered within 25 feet at a place that is not easily accessible.

Biswas had said, "It looks like the packets were thrown over the boundary wall. The search was halted due to poor light. It will resume tomorrow."

Amid confusion, a team of local BJP leaders started an agitation, alleging police apathy. "The plot had been lying vacant and it was a haven for anti-social elements. The police were too reluctant to take any action," said a local BJP leader.
