The Income Tax Department has attached properties, worth several crores, of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav's family members spread across Delhi and Bihar. These, the department says, are 'benami' properties and purchased through black money with the help of shell companies.

Sources stated that the agency will file charge sheet against Lalu's family members in various sections of Benami Transactions Act.

The department has attached about a dozen plots and buildings in Bihar and Delhi, including a farm house and land in the Palam Vihar area, a residential building in the New Friends Colony area of south Delhi, nine plots on a 256.75 decimal land area in Phulwari Sharif area in Patna, where a shopping mall was being constructed, among few others in the same area in Bihar's capital.

Sources in the agency stated that these properties belong to Lalu Yadav's family members including daughter Misa Bharti, her husband Shailesh, sister Ragini and Chanda, Bihar deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi.

The department has exercised its powers under the Prevention of Benami Property Act.

On June 13, the agency had issued the provisional attachment order under Section 24 (3) (where the taxman thinks the person in possession of the property held benami may alienate the property) of the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Act, 2016.

The agency had stated that Lalu's family have been identified as the "beneficiaries" of the alleged benami assets.

In May, I-T sleuths, investigating the case for quite sometime, had carried out country-wide searches against those who had a role or were linked with the purchase and sale of these assets.

Violators under the Act, enacted in 1988 but implemented from November 1 last year, attract a rigorous imprisonment of up to 7 years and fine up to 25 per cent of the fair market value of the property.

The department had also recorded statements of the Lalu's family members.
