Following the deportation of a 36-year-old Kashmiri engineer, Irfan Ahmad Zargar, from Dubai for allegedly being an ISIS sympathiser, the Jammu and Kashmir police on Sunday started questioning him. Zargar hails from Bemina on the outskirts of Srinagar and was deported from Dubai on August 14, four months after he was first arrested.

Now, in India, after remaining in the custody of central security agencies for four days, he was handed over to Jammu and Kashmir police for further investigation.

In April, Zargar was arrested by authorities in UAE as he was returning from Muscat, after months of cyber surveillance of his social media movements, where he had allegedly liked some posts about ISIS.

"Initially, we did not know he had been apprehended. We became worried when he did not call us for five-six days. His brother even flew to Dubai and lodged a missing person's complaint," said Nazir Ahmad, Zargar's uncle.

Later, some of his family members tweeted their concern to external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, seeking her help in tracing Zargar. "It was on a Shab-e-Qadr (a holy night in Ramzan) when he called us from detention; he was instructed to talk in English," said Ahmad.

Irfan again called his family on Sunday morning, informing that he has been handed over to Jammy police. "He is innocent and not involved in any activity. He has been working in Dubai for the last five to six years. He and his friend had set up a shop in Muscat and he had taken leave for one month to go there. He was planning on quitting his job and instead focusing on the shop," said Ahmad.
