The mob that got hold of rape accused Syed Farid Khan only managed to do so after a former inmate in the mob recalled the locations in the jail.

According to an Indian Express report that charts the sequence of events before the mob captured Khan, the Dimapur Central jail officials had managed to hide Khan until the mob found out his whereabouts. The  report says a new team of police officials have been probing if there was any complacency by the Dimapur officials on that day and hence had been reconstructing the entire episode from the moment the mob reached the jail till thelynching took place.

According to them, the Central Jail officials were outnumbered when the mob took over the place. They say that the police couldn't fire at the crowd as a great number of girls, mostly minors were present in the crowd.

The report says that according to the officials the protesters began their march on March 4 wrongly believing that Khan was an illegal Bangladeshi immigrant. They dispersed after they were promised that they will be allowed to hold a protest on March 5 at City Clock Tower between from 9.00 am to 11.00 am. However a section of 'outraged' protestors incited the rest to move towards the jail even while the Naga Student Federation asked them to not to do so.

Once the mob got in the jail, the officials kept changing the location of Khan, the police say in the report. However, an former inmate in the mob recalled that there were a separated row of cells which can be accessed via the courtyard. Khan was kept in the toilet of one of those cells. The mob was able to take Khan from his hiding after they learnt of this location.

The report says the 50-odd police were present in the jail at the time.
