The Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has decided to start a school and hostel for children from very poor background. Here, the kids will be offered free education, stationery and other basic facilities. Till now, they have got around 20 children and by the start of the academic year they will manage to have a proper batch.
"The school and hostel has been started for children who are from very weak economic background. They will be taught free of cost and will be offered all basic facilities as well. At the hostel, there is a separate dorm for boys and girls. The students will be given free meals. Those who are from economically weaker backgrounds, may not be able to afford comfortable places to study, hence we have started this hostel so that they can study comfortably," says Shobha Kothekar, principal.
The Jari Mari Matha Primary School has all the facilities. Hostel rooms are on sharing basis and they have common washrooms on each floor. It is built close to the school itself so that children do not face any problem commuting. "Like other civic schools, students will be provided with one time meal based on their school timings, which can be either in the morning or at noon. Those staying in the hostel will also be given this facility. This school has been started with the idea to provide education to street children and those of daily wage labourers," says Kothekar.
"Along with uniforms, bags and stationery, these children will also be offered raincoats during monsoons and sweaters for the winters. Making this a complete education package, those who are interested in studying can benefit and make complete use of this facility. It is like a scholarship programme for them," adds Kothekar.
As they plan to start from the upcoming academic year, the authorities hope that people will help the economically weaker section of the society and make them aware of this facility and help them take admission and avail this opportunity.
