Concerned over condition of a girl child in the society, Haryana government on Wednesday said it was planning a welfare scheme to empower them so that they are not taken as burden on their parents.
Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar expressed concerns over skewed sex ratio in Haryana and termed female foeticide as "social curse" which he said could only be wiped out if a woman protests against it, as her husband had to accept her decision. The sex ratio in Haryana is 837 in below six years of age.
The Chief Minister said sensing the "condition" of a girl child in the society, the state government was preparing a welfare scheme for them under which care would be taken to protect them from malnutrition, making proper arrangements for their education and employment, so that parents do not face any problem in getting their daughter married.
"The scheme is in pipeline," Khattar said today while launching 'Betiyan Hain Anmol, Inhe Bachao Dil se' campaign under which infant girls suffering from congenital heart disease would get a free heart surgery facility at a private hospital. The campaign would run jointly by Heart Care Foundation of India and Medanta-The Medicity.
Khattar further added though presently 'Ladli' scheme was going on but it was not sufficient as the feeling that a girl child was a burden on parents still persists and it could not be wiped out.
He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also concerned about the imbalance in the sex ratio and given a slogan - 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao'.
"The society will have to face adverse consequences of the imbalance in sex ratio," Khattar added. The CM also lauded the efforts of Medanta and Heart Care of India for starting the campaign to help the girls from poor families to get their heart surgeries done.
He also exhorted both the organisations to ensure that the girls from rural areas also gets the benefit of the scheme. Replying to the questions of media persons, Khattar said the terms and conditions of land alloted to private hospitals would be checked and ensured that terms and conditions were followed meticulously.
"Those found violating the conditions will face consequences as per the law," warned the CM. Earlier, President of Heart Care Foundation of India Dr KK Aggarwal said every year about 78,000 infants who are born with congenial heart diseases in India die due to lack of medical care.
Majority of these are girls because parents do not like to spend the enormous amount of Rs 3 to 5 lakh on surgery of a girl child, which they would be ready if it was their son suffering from the ailment.
Aggarwal said over 300 lives have been saved in the past 6 months through Sameer Malik Heart Care Foundation Fund.
Medicity, Naresh Trehan said Medanta Foundation has decided to open a 500-bed 'not for profit' hospital for children. For this, he requested the Chief Minister to provide 6 acres of land and said that he is ready to pay the cost of that land.
