Newly-elected Goa Congress MLA Vishwajit Rane on Thursday resigned as Member of Legislative Assembly after the party lost the opportunity to form the government in the state.

Rane's resignation came hours after the Manohar Parrikar-led BJP government proved its majority on the floor of the Goa Assembly by winning the trust vote with the support of 22 legislators in the 40-member House.

"I have resigned as MLA. I have also resigned as a member of the Congress party. I am going back to my people for a fresh mandate," Rane told NDTV.

While the Opposition benches included 16 MLAs from Congress, its newly-elected member Vishwajit Rane remained absent during the voting.

On Wednesday, Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh had asked him to explain his meeting with Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. Rane had said that he, along with five to six other MLAs, would quit the party if Vice President Rahul Gandhi did not respond adequately to a letter written to him by them.

A group of the Congress' Goa legislators blamed the central leadership for failure to form the government in the state after the assembly polls, despite being the single largest party.

Rane asserted that it was shocking how despite having the people's mandate in the form of 17 seats in the state assembly, the whole situation was mismanaged by the people in charge of affairs in Goa. "We did not get support from the governor house, but we should have taken steps immediately. If they keep on mismanaging, then the party will be destroyed soon," Rane had said.

BJP had finished second in the state, after Congress, with 13 seats. Parrikar proved his majority on the floor of the house with 12 legislators from the BJP, three from the Goa Forward Party (GFP), three from the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), three Independents and one from the NCP voting in favour of the trust motion.
