The second phase of the odd even road rationing formula for private cars will be back in the national capital between April 15 and 30, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Thursday.

He added that the decision is a result of a majority of Delhi residents voting for bringing back the scheme.

“We are also seriously considering implementing the scheme for two weeks every month,” Kejriwal said.

Two-wheelers, single women drivers and VIPs will once again be exempt from the restrictions, even as the final list is being prepared. dna had reported that the government is likely to exempt as per the odd even rule, cars with odd-numbered plates to run on odd-numbered dates, while even-numbered cars will be allowed on the other dates.

According to Kejriwal, 81 per cent of people from Delhi wanted the scheme back. The government had initiated phone calls, asked people to submit their feedback on an email address, and organised Jan Sabhas to gather opinion on bringing back the rule.

Explaining the decision to exempt two-wheelers again in the phase II of the odd even rule, Kejriwal said the public infrastructure is not strong enough to support the entire moving population of Delhi. We expect 1,000 additional buses in May and another 2,000 by the end of the year,” the CM said, adding that the scheme can not be implemented permanently till the public transport system in the city is augmented.

The CM also announced plans to build separate elevated BRT corridors for faster transport in buses.

The odd-even rule was first brought in the capital on January 1, following the Supreme Court’s order to impose emergency measures to reduce alarming air pollution levels in the capital.

While there was no significant improvement in the pollution levels, the scheme had reduced traffic volume at major bottlenecks, clearing off traffic snarls from the city’s roads.

The AAP government has decided to employ 500 retired defence personnel to enforce the scheme this time as a measure to ease pressure on the sub divisional magistrate.

“We have decided to employ 500 retired defence personnel to be employed as traffic enforcement officers. They will be appointed by April,” he said.

Out of a total 276 mohalla sabhas held, just one in Vishwas Nagar said it was not in favour of odd-even.

92 per cent said they would not buy a second car. High demand for exemption to VIPs.
