Bawana area of North West Delhi saw massive protests on Saturday after a dead body of an 11-year-old girl was found in a canal. The girl was a resident of JJ Colony Bawana.

It was April 21 when Shama,11, left home after being scolded by her mother on some minor issue. The parents thought that angry over being scolded, she would have gone to her friend's place, but when Shama didn't return home till late evening, her parents started looking for her.

After enquiring with her friends and some relatives, the parents went to lodge an FIR in the police nearby police station. The parents allege that police did not lodge the FIR in the case and tried to ignore the matter first.

Mysterious death:

The following day on April 22, a dead body was found in a canal near Rohini. The body was recovered by KN Katzu Marg police station's officials. Shama's  parents allege that they were informed to identify the body two days after the recovery of the dead body. The parents have also alleged that their daughter might have been raped and murdered but the primary reports hasn't shown any such signs.

The full postmortem report is still being awaited.

Police- public clash:

When Shama's dead body reached her colony, angry residents clashed with the police, calling it a complete case of negligence and delay. Fuming residents blocked the main Bawana-Narela road and laid her dead body in the middle of the road.

The situation took an ugly turn when violent protesters ransacked a police post and set ablaze a policeman's car and two motorcycles.

Amid the hullabaloo, some miscreants took advantage of the situation and broke in some of the cars that were parked in the area and stole valuables from them. One of those cars belonged to an IAMIN correspondent too.

As the situation worsened, the DCP Outer Delhi called for the additional enforcement. When the mob started pelting stones at the policemen around 6 pm, the police had to resort to using tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The police used dozens of tear gas shells but the crowd did not cease to revolt.  After over 2 hours of commotion, the Delhi police managed to control the situation around 7:30 pm.

While the people allege that police's role to first hush the case and then to delay getting the body identified reveals their insensitivity and ineptitude to handle such cases. The police, however, plays defensive and asks for time till postmortem report is out.

Post the clashes, police continues to be deployed in and around the JJ colony.
