Shocking incident.
In an incident eerily similar to what happened in GD Birla school in Kolkata, teacher of another elite school in the city has been accused of sexual misconduct.
According to reports in Zee 24 Ghanta, a dance teacher in a Convent school in South Kolkata has been accused of sexually abusing a class-two girl for over an year. The accused has been arrested.
Now the student is in third grade. The incident only came to light in the last couple of days, when the student stopped coming to school. According to reports, the teacher named Soumen was sexually harassing the girl for over an year. He also threatened the girl with dire consequences if she dared to tell it to anyone. Soumen even said that he will bury her in the grounds if she opened her mouth.
Despite all those threats, the matter has finally come to light and naturally it has lead to lot of resentment among the parents. On Friday morning, situation became tensed when parents started protesting in front of the school. The school virtually turned into a fortress with massive police presence. According to parents, the school didn't take any lessons from the GD Birla incident and arranged special security for the kids. They allege that there is no CCTVs in the school, which could have been used to keep tab of such incidents. Police have detained the accused and are probing the incident.
School authorities as of now are silent and are unwilling to come on record. In the GD Birla case, two teachers were accused of sexually harassing a student. The school authorities were accused of covering up. Finally normalcy ensured after the headmistress offered to step down. Several incidents where teachers and sometimes fellow students have sexually harassed students have been unearthed in the recent past. These have lead to a question about safety of students in the schools.
