BJP MP Udit Raj on Saturday night alleged that members of his Dalit community were being "tortured" in various parts of the country in the wake of the violent protests during the 'Bharat Bandh' earlier this week.

"Reports are pouring in that those Dalits who participated in agitation on April 2 are being tortured and it must be stopped," he said in a tweet. "Dalits are tortured at large scale after April 2 country-wide agitation. People from Barmer, Jalore, Jaipur, Gwalior, Meerut, Bulandshahr, Karoli and other parts calling that not only anti-reservationists but police also beating & slapping false cases," he said.
All these places, incidentally are parts of states ruled by the BJP.

A worker of a Dalit organisation run by him in Gwalior was being tortured even though he had not done anything wrong, Udit Raj said. He represents North West Delhi in the Lok Sabha. Dalit protesters had blocked trains, clashed with police and set fire to vehicles in violent protests across seven states on April 2 against the alleged dilution of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, leaving at least 11 people dead and many injured.

Udit Raj is the latest BJP MP to voice discontent over atrocities against Dalits.

Dr Yashwant Singh, a Dalit MP from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Sunday raised his voice against Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing his government of not catering to the 30 crore Dalits in the country during the course of the four years that he has been in power.

In a letter to the PM, Dr Singh, MP from Nagina, a reserved parliamentary constituency, has drawn the attention of the PM towards the plight of Dalits under the Modi-led BJP regime. Dr Singh has urged Modi to pass a bill in the Parliament to ensure effective Dalit reservations in the private sector. He also requested Modi to file an appeal in the Supreme Court against its ruling on the SC/ST Act.

“Constitutional rights of Dalits are being denied by courts since we do not have adequate representation in courts,” he alleged. “I had met you personally to request you to pass a Bill for reservation in private jobs and promotions. But in the last four years, nothing has been done by your government for protecting the rights of 30 crore Dalits in the country,” he charged. Further, he wrote, “Being a Dalit, my capabilities were not put to use by the BJP.”

Earlier, Etawah Ashok Dohre, Savitri Bai Phule and Chhote Lal Kharwar, all MPs from BJP have echoed anti-Dalit sentiments propagated by the Central government.
