Cancer care in north India receives shot in the arm

In a big boost to cancer care, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency Varanasi will be home to one of the largest cancer care hospitals in North India.

Estimated to cost Rs 580 crore, the Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya (MPMM) Cancer Centre is expected to benefit a population of 40 lakh.

Tata Trust has offered to construct the Hospital building at the MPMM Cancer Centre as well as provide equipment for the hospital. Tata Trust plans to hand over the hospital building with all requisite furniture and essential medical equipment, to MPMM Cancer Centre by December 2018. A tripartite MoU is being signed between DoAE–TMC, IMS–BHU and Tata Trust. Rest of the construction involving the offices, resident doctors' hostel, faculty residences, dharmashala, canteen etc. would be done by TMC.

Cancer registration has begun in Varanasi district. This would help in identifying the occurrence of different types of cancers in this region. Professionals have been trained in cancer registration and are documenting pathologically proven cancer cases. The data collection for the first year should be complete by the end of this year. The report on the types of cancer in this region would be ready by March 2018.

Gall stones and gall bladder cancers are the most prominent in the region, the preliminary report says. TMC has mooted a consortium of gall bladder cancer with collaborators from Varanasi, Lucknow & Assam (Guwahati, Silchar) to understand the possible causes. The next step would then be to test a preventive strategy since this cancer is fatal, say sources.

In the meantime, the cancer hospital of Indian Railways has been taken up for redevelopment and Tata Memorial hospital will make it functional by March 2018. This hospital at the Railway building will look after leukemia and lymphoma which has no dedicated facility in the region. This group of cancers are immensely curable. The hospital will also focus on children's cancers.

Tata Memorial hospital has already identified over 15 cancer specialists and will include the existing cancer specialists from BHU as well as railway hospital in enhancing manpower to look after cancer care in the region. Over 50 nurses are being trained for cancer nursing and technicians to take care of labs.
