The owner and manager of Annapurna Nursing Home in Burdwan have been arrested by police which was investigating a case wherein a critical care ambulance from the nursing home, carrying a 16-year-old from Burdwan to Kolkata, was accompanied by a person who was an AC mechanic posing as a doctor.

Police arrested Animesh Mullick, owner of the nursing home and SK Rahul Islam, manager of the nursing home, after questioning them. Police sources said that the search was on for one Vicky, who used to arrange for ambulances for patients.

Arijit Das, who was a candidate of the ongoing Class X board exams had written his first three tests in spite of a fever. However, after his condition deteriorated, he was admitted to the nursing home in Burdwan and was being shifted to Kolkata's Rabindranath Tagore International Institute for Cardiac Sciences, off EM Bypass, on March 16. They had to cover a distance of over 100 km.

SK Sarfajuddin, who had accompanied Das, posed as a doctor in the ambulance but on the way when Das' condition deteriorated, he was unable to even provide oxygen.

"Our suspicion grew when we saw that the driver of the ambulance was helping Sarfajuddin put on the oxygen mask. Upon questioning, we found that he was only an AC mechanic who has been left to accompany my ailing child. It is because of this negligence that my son died even before he reached the hospital. The ambulance was well-equipped but I don't know why the nursing home authorities left the mechanic, who was unable to operate any of the equipment, which could have probably saved my son," said Ranjit Das, father of the deceased.

District health officers assured action against the offenders. "We are investigating the case. We will find out if the nursing home authorities are at fault. If they are found guilty, strict action will be taken against them," said Pranab Roy, the chief medical officer of Health in East Burdwan district.

Mihir Banerjee, the president of the managing committee of Bhabanandapur High School, where the boy studied said that the boy was bright and was expected to be one of the toppers. "It is unbelievable that he died in this tragic manner," he said.
