Satellite police are now exploring the role of a local agent, who helped the duo find their victims in Ahmedabad.

Having arrested Ashwin aka Sahil Morjharia and his friend Zarin aka Nidhi Memon for visa fraud, Satellite police are now exploring the role of a local agent, who helped the duo find their victims in the city.

According to D I Sisodiya, senior police inspector of Satellite, the duo had visited Ahmedabad twice during February and March. “Before their first visit, Morjharia gave an advertisement in a local newspaper and lured people by offering easy work permit visa for Europe and New Zealand. After seeing their advertisement, one Kalpesh Bhatt met the couple at Courtyard Marriott hotel, where the duo was staying ,” said Sisodiya.

Investigation revealed that Bhatt agreed to become a commission agent for them.

Using his contacts and experience, he identified 28 visa aspirants in the city and fixed their meeting with the duo. Morjharia and Zarin met all these aspirants at Marriott hotel and took Rs10,000 as processing fee from each candidate and asked them to submit their passports.

“On their second visit to the city, the duo asked Bhatt to tell their clients that their work permits have been approved. As per their instructions, Bhatt collected Rs73 lakh in cash from the 28 victims as final installment on behalf of Morjharia and Zarin,” said Sisodiya.

Based on the confessions of the duo, cops learned that Bhatt was equally involved in the racket. After collecting cash, he transferred Rs35 lakh to Zarin’s bank account, which she opened in Mumbai in the name of Nidhi Memon. He pocketed the remaining Rs38 lakh.

“Hence, we have every reason to doubt Bhatt’s role. We have called him on Wednesday for further investigation” said Sisodiya.

Meanwhile, cops have also learned that Morjharia belongs to a well-to-do Gujarati family in Mumbai. “He is married and has two kids. He opened his own restaurant in Panchgani, where Zarin used to come regularly. He won her confidence by giving her Rs35,000, which she needed to fight a legal battle against her former husband for the custody of their nine-year-old daughter” said Sisodiya, who also learned that the duo has cheated many others in Navsari by promising foreign visa.
