At 16,942 ft on LAC, Yoga brings India and China together

History was scripted on Thursday when soldiers of People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China joined Indian Army troops in performing Yoga at Daulat Beg Oldie along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh.

Troops from both armies celebrated Fourth International Yoga Day at Daulat Beg Oldie - Tien Wein Dien meeting point along the LAC at the altitude of 16,942 feet.

“The soldiers of both Indian Army and People Liberation Army participated in the event with great enthusiasm and displayed bonhomie between the two great armies”, said Colonel NN Joshi, defence spokesman at the Northern Command Headquarters. 

Colonel Joshi noted that during the Yoga session, a talk was also given on the importance of Yoga for health, wellbeing and inner balance at the high altitude areas.

“Apart from giving impetus to physical fitness, the event was aimed at further cementing the bonds of friendship and mutual trust between both the nations following the motto of the Fourth International Yoga Day `Yoga for Peace and Harmony", Colonel Joshi said. 

The joint yoga session, Colonel Joshi said, was organised between the soldiers of both nations on the longest day of the year, in the sub-zero temperatures, thereby displaying the undeterred courage and motivation of the soldiers.

From the LAC to icy heights of Actual Ground Position Line (AGPL) at the world’s highest battlefield of Siachen to the mountains and plains, the security forces guarding borders and fighting terrorists performed yoga across Jammu and Kashmir.

“Yoga camps were also conducted by other Army units and formations of Northern Command across the Jammu and Kashmir. This included Yoga at `Siachen Glacier’ the highest battlefield where soldiers performed Yoga and were guided by Sadhguru from Isha foundation”, Colonel Joshi added.

A Yoga camp was also organised on the occasion at Northern command Headquarters at Udhampur where 1000 officers, soldiers and families attended. Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh and Kalpana Singh Dhatt, Regional President Army Wives Welfare Assocation also participated.

“Qualified Yoga instructors assisted in performance of Yoga and imparted knowledge on the art and science of Yoga, its benefits and its relevance in the present day scenario. Importance of Yoga in disease prevention, health promotion and management of many lifestyle related disorders was shared with all”, he said.

Apart from army, CRPF, BSF, Jammu and Kashmir police and other security forces too performed Yoga across the state.
