Army man held for outraging modesty of woman

An Army jawan posted with the elite counter-insurgency unit near the Line of Control (LoC) has been arrested for allegedly blackmailing and outraging the modesty of a young woman in Ramban district of Jammu division.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) Ramesh Kumar Jala told DNA that Govardhan Singh was arrested after the victim reported the matter to them on March 2.

"Singh is posted in Tangdhar and was on leave at Ramban. He has been arrested for harassment, blackmailing and other offences," he said.

Crime Branch had registered a case of outraging the modesty of a woman, sexual harassment, stalking, and cheating under different sections of Ranbir Penal Code. The accused has also been booked under different sections of Information Technology Act for sending offensive messages etc.

"Investigations are on. Details are being ascertained," Colonel Rajesh Kalia, defence spokesman at Srinagar, told DNA.

Crime Branch has also arrested Ashok Singh, owner of a computer shop, who has been made the co-accused for his role in helping the main accused to harass and blackmail the victim. "Both are remanded in police custody," said Jala.

The case unfolded after girl reported that she was being blackmailed by the accused who threatened to circulate and upload her objectionable pictures on the internet. The accused allegedly demanded Rs five lakh from the girl in order to keep the matter secret.

Crime Branch immediately swung into action and traced the accused. The subsequent investigation led them to the local computer shop which was used for committing the crime. Cops later picked up its owner and after questioning made him co-accused in the case.
