The Rajya Sabha term for three candidates is about to end next month from Gujarat. These members are Union Minister Smriti Irani, BJP leader Dilip Pandya and Congress leader Ahmed Patel. There were talks that Dilip Pandya may be replaced with Amit Shah.

But top BJP sources indicated that Amit Shah is too senior to go to the Rajya Sabha. He has crucial responsibilities of winning a few state elections due this year and next year. Also, the BJP is depending on him for victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. He is expected to tour the country extensively for these responsibilities and he may not allocate much time for his work in Rajya Sabha.

Also, if Amit Shah goes to Rajya Sabha as a member, he will have to be given crucial responsibility in the government. But Narendra Modi depends on him for party affairs. Also, he may not be the leader of the house as the BJP doesn't allow one leader to hold two posts. For the same reason, he may not be inducted in the Cabinet even as a senior minister.

Instead, Amit Shah will continue to work for the party as the national president. He has a daunting task of bringing the BJP in power in Odisha and he also needs to focus on party victory in Gujarat and the neighbouring states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh. If he goes to Rajya Sabha, his time may be divided between his work as Rajya Sabha member and as party president, which the party may not like.

Party sources say that he will continue to work as king-maker in the party.

Work to continue

Top BJP sources indicated that Amit Shah is too senior to go to the Rajya Sabha.
Thus he will continue to work for the party as the national president.
