In a shocking case of dowry demand by a man, Pushpa (name changed), a resident of Lakhisaray in Bihar, came to Delhi to sell her kidney. Her boyfriend demanded Rs1,80,000 to marry her. However, she was saved by counsellors from Delhi Commission for Women after the doctor whom Pushpa met at the Lady Hardinge Medical College informed the commission about her.

The 21-year-old had been married before but she returned home after a discord with her husband. During her staty at home, she befriended a neighbour who worked in Uttar Pradesh's Muradabad district. After they got close to each other, Pushpa ran away from home and went to Muradabad to live with her boyfriend. However, he demanded money to marry her. Blinded by love, Pushpa came to Delhi alone to sell her kidney.

At the LHMC, Pushpa discussed her wish to sell a kidney with a doctor, who got suspicious of her being involved in a kidney racket and informed DCW counsellors. When the counsellors approached her, she said she was determined to marry her boyfriend and even threatened to commit suicide. Attempts to convince her to lodge a complaint against the man were futile.

Soon after counselling, Pushpa was allowed to stay in a shelter home and her parents were contacted. She has gone home with her parents now. DCW has forwarded the details of the case to Bihar Women Commission with a request for Pushpa's regular counselling and to assist her in taking criminal action against the man.

Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal commended the action of the doctor, who gave information about Pushpa to DCW and the police. It is primarily through his efforts that a girl got saved, she said. Further, she requested women to not give into undue demands in relationships and take strict action against people who do wrong.
