A Delhi court has extended till May 16 judicial custody of the dermatologist husband of a 31- year-old doctor of AIIMS who allegedly committed suicide due to mental torture caused by his sexual orientation.

Metropolitan Magistrate Sachin Sangwan remanded Dr Kamal Vedi, 34, in judicial custody after Delhi Police informed the court that investigation in the case was going on. Kamal was arrested by police on May 19 from his residence in AIIMS quarters in south Delhi after his wife, Priya Vedia, an anaesthetist at AIIMS, was found dead with her wrist slit at a hotel in Paharganj in central Delhi where she had checked-in after a fight with her husband.
According to police, the couple got married five years ago and soon after the marriage, Priya came to know that her husband was a "gay".

However, in the suicide note she had claimed that she had "accepted it" and was ready to live with it but subsequent torture by her husband led her to take the extreme step, it said. It said a detailed suicide note was found on the spot and a similar Facebook post made by the woman revealed that her husband's sexual orientation led to sour relationship between the doctor couple.

A case was registered at Nabi Karim Police Station and Kamal was booked under sections 498A (cruelty) and 304B (dowry death) of the IPC. Police had received a complaint from Kamal on the evening of April 18 that her wife is missing since morning.

It was also being alleged that she was hiding somewhere near Nabi Karim area in central Delhi and a police search was carried out in several hotels.
