Former Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar on Monday moved the Barasat CBI court for anticipatory bail, after evading the investigating agency's summons for two days. The court is scheduled to hear the case on Tuesday.

West Bengal government officials today sent a reply to an earlier CBI letter inquiring whereabouts of the former top cop. This reply from the Director-General (DG), Home Secretary and Chief Secretary said that Kumar is currently on a 17-day leave, from September 9-25. The letter from the state secretariat also informed the CBI that the investigating agency's summons have been sent to Kumar's residence.
For context, a CBI team had earlier submitted four letters to the state government inquiring Kumar's whereabouts after the ADG CID failed to appear to the investigating agency's summons for two successive days. Two of the letters were addressed to the DG CID since he, the letter said, was liable to answer for the ADG's absence. All the other letters were addressed to the state secretariat officials demanding the reasons for Rajeev Kumar's absence.
After the Calcutta High Court withdrew Kumar's protection from the custodial interrogations and arrest made by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on September 13, the CBI had reached the ex-top cop's doorstep and served him a notice, asking him to appear before the investigating agency, which he failed to do.
According to sources, Kumar had cited his wife's illness as the reason for his unavailability, asking for time till September 25.
It remains to be seen how the government and the investigating agency further reacts to the developments as the drama unfurls.
