On Tuesday night, 350 resident doctors from Nagpur Government Medical College, who have been on mass leave since October 7 citing concerns about their security, were issued termination letters by the dean of the hospital.

According to the resident doctors, after Maharashtra Security Force (MSF) guards went on strike in the third week of September, they have not resumed their duties at the hospital. The guards went on strike demanding that their 11-month contracts be done away with and they be recruited on a permanent basis. After an unknown woman’s body was found on the hospital premises a few days ago, the doctors immediately went on strike. The doctors are demanding security in the hospital before they resume work.

The termination letter, signed by dean Dr Abhimanyu Niswade, stated that the hospital authorities held a meeting with the doctors to resolve the issue before issuing the letter. It also states that on October 9, a government authority team from Mumbai visited Nagpur to listen to the demands of the doctors and assured that security would be provided within two days.

Dr Pradeep Kaswan, President of Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctor (MARD), Nagpur Government Medical College, said, “We all have decided that we will resume duty only after we get security as promised by the authorities. Over 350 resident doctors have already been given termination letters. However, we will continue the strike. We want the authorities to meet our basic demand. Around 60 security guards were posted in the hospital on rotation basis.”

On Wednesday evening, the doctors had a meeting with Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Mumbai and the Medical Education Minister.

“We want them to give us a written assurance. Who should we blame if anything happens to the doctors on the premises?” asked Dr Kaswan.

The resident doctors are getting support from other doctors across the state.
