When Egyptian national Eman Ahmed was brought to Mumbai on February 11, she weighed over 500 kg and could barely lift her hands. Less than a month later, on March 7, she underwent her first surgery — a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy— at Mumbai's Saifee Hospital and has now lost more than 100 kg.
"We would not like to operate under intense media pressure," bariatric surgeon Dr Muffazal Ladkawala had said during an earlier press conference.
So when the first surgery took place, Ladkawala's team waited for a day before announcing any details. Surgeries on such super-obese individuals can be very risky but his team revealed that Ahmed "had an uneventful surgery and anaesthesia course." She is currently on post-operative care.

Lakdawala's team has revealed that Ahmed is now on oral fluids and is accepting them well. They will now focus on correcting all her associated medical problems so that she can be fit enough to fly back to Egypt soon.
Following bariatrics surgery patients can lose up to 75 per cent of their body fat in a year. Doctors hope to make Ahmed lose around 200 kg more in the next six months so that she can sit up.
