Why should only girls dress a certain way?: Sonarika Bhadoria

When Sonarika Bhadoria, best remembered for her role as Parvati in Devon Ke Dev Mahadev, posted her bikini pictures on social media, little did she know that she will face the wrath of netizens. And all because they couldn’t accept the actress who had played Parvati wearing revealing clothes. So venomous were the reactions that Sonarika deleted the pictures and wrote a note expressing her inability to cope with the hateful comments. “It’s two years since the serial ended and three years since I played the role. After me there were two other Parvatis! Why should people react to my pictures. It’s not as if I haven’t worn short dresses or revealing clothes before. I have done it all. And if I am on a beach I am not going to wear saris or salwar kameezes. I don’t understand what was so objectionable about the pictures. It’s not even a proper bikini. It’s a beach skirt and a bikini top,” says the actress.

There was a time when actors like Arun Govil and Deepika Chikhalia, who played Ram and Sita in the first televised Ramayan had to be careful about what they wore and the way they behaved off screen. “Yes. I was also sceptical when I was offered Mahadev. But the makers convinced me that it was another era and people’s thought process had changed now. After all, we are actors and are playing the roles. Off camera we have the freedom to lead our lives the way we want to,” she states.

Sonarika is also miffed about what she calls the hypocritical attitude. “Gurmeet (Choudhary) who is a dear friend of mine played Ram (Ramayan) and the next serial he did was Geet Hui Sabse Parayi. In that he gave bare bodied, sexy shots and girls were drooling over him. Even boys looked up to him for fitness. Similarly, my Mahadev co-star Mohit Raina had girls going crazy for him because of his looks and six-pack-abs.Yes, he did full justice to the character, but girls called him the hot Shiva. Why should girls only bear the brunt, be submissive, dress and behave in a certain way,” questions Sonarika. 

While the trolls forced her to delete the pictures, after a while she posted them back. “That was because my brother said that by deleting the pictures I was giving importance to the haters and asked me to put them back,” says the actress. Sonarika, who quit the serial to pursue a career in films is now all set to make her Bollywood debut. In fact, it was after wrapping up the the shoot of the film in Mauritius that she spent time unwinding on a beach. “I put those pictures of me holidaying there. It’s not for the film or a photo shoot,” she informs. Sonarika has already done three films down South and her last release was a Telugu film co-starring Vishnu Manchu.

There are reports of the actress seeing Vikas Parashar. Not much is known about him, but considering the pictures she has posted of them together, they seem to be madly in love. She, however, refused to comment on her relationship saying that it was her personal life and she would like others to respect her privacy.
