Known to make slice of life films, Raj Kumar Hirani has never faced problems in getting his films cleared from the Censor Board. However, for Saala Khadoos, the national award winning director was apprehensive thinking it may have to face the Censor Board axe, owing to the usage of a particular word, listed as objectionable by the Board.

In an interview given to Firstpost, Hirani had mentioned that, “I went to the censor board with the film and I was worried. I heard that they are removing many words from films. I was scared for my film's title and one song. However, I was pleasantly surprised when they had no objections to anything and we got U/A certificate."

He also spoke over the contention of the word 'Saala' to be used in the title of the film as it is considered an expletive. Hirani explained of how there is always an 'abuse' which is attached to the word 'Saala' but insisted on the point that the film Saala Khadoos is a proper family entertainer. He even tried putting up his point by saying that the word 'saala' has been used with such innocence that Censor Board should not remove it, as reported in the same interview.

Actor R Madhavan who was also present for the interview spoke of how choosy he is when it comes to doing films. The actor, who is rarely seen doing any Hindi cinema revealed that he does not want to upset his audience by doing films just to tick of a frequency.

“In 15 years, I have done eleven films. And what happens is when you do those kinds of film is that you usually stay in the public memory for a longer time. You have to be very careful with the way the public is involved and you cannot afford to insult them when they come to see your movies,” Madhavan told Firstpost. Madhavan even claimed  that he has always tried to offer something fresh with his every film. “My endeavour is to find a script that will push my boundaries and take it to a different level,” he reportedly said.

However when comparisons were drawn of this movie to Chak De India and an earlier Hindi film made on boxing named Mary Kom, the duo expressed their disappointment over it. Madhavan who chose to respond first reportedly said, “You know every time there is a sports film, there will be a comparison. Chak De released nine years ago after that they released a film called Million Dollar Baby in the US but somehow nobody in India said ‘Hey, Million Dollar.. was copied from Chak De’. But if we make a film on a coach and a boxer they say ‘Is it similar? Is it copied? Is it a spin off’?’ I don’t understand why if Hollywood makes it, its original and we make one, it becomes a duplicate or copy.”

Hirani who also shared a similar sentiment added to the discussion by saying, “There is at least 40 to 50 love stories made every year. There the theme is love, here the theme is boxing. But those love stories are very different from each other. Here yes, the similarity is the theme but the story is completely different," as reported by Firstpost.

The year 2016 will witness many movies with the central theme of 'sports and wrestling' including Aamir Khan's Dangal and Salman Khan's Sultan. However Hirani feels it is nothing but co-incidence and thus commented saying, "Some things happen, people come across stories. For example, while I was making PK, Oh My God happened. We were making Saala Khadoos and Mary Kom happened before that. When we start, we think that we have a unique subject, but possibly there are other people who think the same," as reported by Firstpost.
