Whenever there’s a Khan film, there’s a sense of true celebration among fans and at the box office. With the industry thriving on the successes of such films, much was anticipated from Salman Khan’s big ticket Diwali release this year. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo opened up to a humongous figure, recording the best in Salman’s career. Also according to distributors, PRDP is also the highest opener of all times in Bollywood. That leaves us with one question.

Who won the box office race? Prem Ratan Dhan Payo or Happy New Year? Salman Khan or Shah Rukh Khan? Here’s a detailed explanation.

Opening day!

With PRDP bringing in the moolah, comparisons were bound to happen. With Shah Rukh Khan’s Happy New Year. If you go by producer figures, HNY had a better opening than PRDP. According to producers, HNY opened to a mammoth Rs 44.97 crore but distributors say that it opened to a little over Rs 36 crore, which at that time was the highest for any Hindi film ever. For PRDP, the producers have claimed that the opening is of Rs 40.35 crore whereas boi.com states that it has opened to a record breaking Rs 39 crore approx nett! Now it’s a given in the industry that the producer figures are slightly higher than what the distributors eventually give out. In this case, it’s up to what one follows. But all said and done, Boxofficeindia.com is known for its accurate figures. So if you go by that, Salman has thumped Shah Rukh this time!

Three day collections?

According to the producers, both PRDP and HNY have sailed through the Rs 100 crore mark after its third day. Yet again, there’s a slight disparity in the figures issued by distributors. According to boi.com, HNY recorded a huge three day total of Rs 93 crore whereas PRDP just edged past it, adding Rs 3 crore more to its kitty. PRDP stands at a 3-day total of Rs 96.50 crore nett. Who won? Salman again!

Fastest 100 crore?

Both HNY and PRDP entered the 100 crore club only on its fourth day (distributor figure) while the producers (Red Chillies and Fox Star) claimed that both their films raked in 100 crore in a matter of three days. But the truth is that there’s only one film which has entered the 100 crore brigade in a matter of 3 days! Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan. That is also the fastest film to touch the coveted century mark.

Now what?

All that needs to be seen now is whether PRDP can trod past HNY’s lifetime collections. With Rs 26 crore on Sunday, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo now stands at a total figure of Rs 122 crore (approx) in a matter of four days. HNY had a lifetime of around Rs 180 crore (distributor figures) while producers claim it made Rs 202 crore. Ditto with Salman Khan. It depends on what the producers and distributors eventually say. But given the difference now, it seems PRDP will beat HNY’s lifetime as well.
