Though it was aired in Australia in 2010, Junior MasterChef Australia like the name suggests is a spin-off of MasterChef Australia, which itself is adapted from the British show MasterChef. And just like the adult version, (we say ‘adult’ as the contestants are an older lot compared to the kids), this one is just as interesting. But unlike several other cookery shows, this one has nothing to do with cuss words used by chef Gordon Ramsay in Devil’s Kitchen or any seductress (read: Nigella Lawson on her show, which is also called ‘the seductive cookery show’). Rather, in comparison this one is far better than even the original, as it features contestants aged 8 to 12, who compete for the title, Junior MasterChef Australia.

Right from the time the audition episodes were aired, one could feel the fun vibe the show brings along with it. It gave the impression that this will be one exciting journey and edgy too as expectations from these tiny tots are not as much as one would have from the professionals and homemakers. The contest began with a countrywide hunt for top 50 contestants, who were short-listed after auditioning almost 5,000 children. While the kids here are a super-talented bunch, the icing on the cake are judges and culinary experts Gary Mehigan, George Calombaris, Anna Gare and Matt Preston who are gentle and motivating in their remarks about the dishes and handle the young ones rather sensitively.

The youngest girl nine-year-old Siena is one of the toughest nuts to crack and watching one episode can make you aware that these kids are capable of giving adult chefs a run for their money.

The show is also a refreshing change from other kid-based shows, as for several years now one has seen kids dance and sing on reality shows, but to see them dish out delicacies that are even tough for adults to prepare, leaves one in awe of the creativity these children possess.

The Australian Materchef has always been far ahead than its contemporaries, and Junior too does not let you down in anyway. Do watch it, if you are bored of the same ol’ soaps and run of the mill reality shows, and wish to get mesmerised by the sheer dedication, ingenious streak of these kids. The beauty lies in the fact that there are no false pretences and it’s a pure delight to watch these innocent ones work their magic making some yummy delicacies. A family bonder for sure!
