    Jimmy plays host

Jimmy Kimmel was the host this year and managed to hold the audience rapt with his jokes. The presenter made many political references through the night, poking fun at Donald Trump. Kimmel ‘blamed’ Apprentice executive producer Mark Burnett for Trump’s popularity saying, “Many have asked who’s to blame for Donald Trump and I’ll tell you who: he’s sitting right there, that guy — Mark Burnett. Thanks to Mark, we don’t have to watch reality shows anymore, we’re living in one.” He later added, “Television can also tear us apart. If it wasn’t for TV, would Donald Trump be running for president? No, he would be at home quietly rubbing up against his wife Malaria while she pretends to be asleep.”

Kimmel also broached the subject of diversity which had become a big issue with hashtag #Oscarssowhite trending last time. He said, “This year’s nominees are the most diverse ever, and the only thing we value more than diversity is congratulating ourselves on how much we value diversity. The Oscars are now telling people we’re one of their closest friends — we’re not by the way.” He added, “If you’re a person of colour, please, find a white person — it shouldn’t be hard, I see a bunch of them right here — just take a moment to reach out and say thanks for your bravery.” This prompted Aziz Ansari to get up from his seat in jest.

Snacking on PB & J sandwiches

Jimmy Kimmel’s mom Joan made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the audience that was handed out by the children from Stranger Things. Modern Family star Sofia Vergara was spotted enthusiastically eating one. While the gesture was cute, it reminded us of the 2014 Oscars with Ellen DeGeneres ordering pizza. Yes, we get that the guests are hungry, but can we try something new the next time around?

    We are the Champions

Game of Thrones broke the record for the highest number of Emmy Awards won by any fictional series. The show’s total number of awards now stands at 38 in total beating Frasier. It won 12 Emmys this year itself, out of 23 total nominations.

    Big winners too

The People v. O.J. Simpson: An American Crime Story took home five wins in the mini-series categories, including Lead actor nods for Sarah Paulson and Courtney B Vance and supporting actor for Sterling K Brown. Sarah, who played Marcia Clark in the series, paid tribute to the former prosecutor in her acceptance speech.  “The more I learned about the real Marcia Clark, the more I had to recognise that I, along with the rest of the world, had been superficial and careless in my judgement.”

    First time’s the charm

Rami Malek won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, his first win. While accepting his award for his portrayal of computer hacker Elliot Anderson in Mr Robot, he said, “I play a young man who, I think like so many of us, is profoundly alienated. The unfortunate thing is I’m not sure how many of us would want to hang out with a guy like Elliot. But I want to honour the Elliots, because there’s a little bit of Elliot in all of us, isn’t there?”

    Finally awarded

Tatiana Maslany got Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Orphan Black. Given that the actress plays multiple characters on the show that is in its fourth season, most felt the award was much deserved and long overdue. The actress’ phone kept buzzing with congratulatory messages while she was on stage.

    Emotions ran high

It was a special night for Julia Louis-Dreyfus as she was awarded Outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for Veep. She said, “I think that Veep has torn down the wall between comedy and politics. Our show started out as political satire, but it now feels more like a sobering documentary.” The actress also held back tears as she dedicated her win to her father, William Louis-Dreyfus, who had passed away just a few days ago. “I’m so glad that he liked Veep because his opinion was the one that really mattered,” she said.
