Actor Chris Hemsworth, who is famous as the Marvel superhero Thor, recently shared a photograph on his official Instagram where he shared solidarity with the protestors of the Standing Rock pipeline protest, and in the process apologised for cultural appropriation in the past.

Members of the Sioux tribe, a Native American tribe from North America, have been demonstrating against plans to construct a 1,931 kilometre-long pipeline between the oil fields of North Dakota and Illinois. The protestors say that the pipeline will desecrate indigenous burial grounds, and contaminate their only water source.

Hemsworth said he hoped that highlighting his own ignorance can help spread awareness about the "complex and extensive issues facing indigenous communities." The actor, who is currently filming the third installment of Thor, posted a picture of him and director Taika Waititi holding up a sign that reads "We stand with Standing Rock." He added "I would also like to take this opportunity to raise something that has been bothering me for some time. Last New Year's Eve I was at a 'Lone Ranger' themed party where some of us, myself included, wore the traditional dress of First Nations people. I was stupidly unaware of the offence this may have caused, and the sensitivity around this issue. I sincerely and unreservedly apologise to all First Nations people for this thoughtless action."

Hemsworth isn't the first actor to stand up, and protest the construction of the pipeline. His co-star Mark Ruffalo has already expressed his views on how the pipeline will affect the Native American tribe. Ben Affleck, Ray Fisher, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller, who are acting in the upcoming Justice League film, have also voiced their protest. Academy Award winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio also expressed solidarity with the Sioux tribe, and tweeted about it. "Standing w/ the Great Sioux Nation to protect their water & lands. Take a stand (sic)" he wrote in May.
